Practice safe design: Use a concept. —Petrula Vontrikis

The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is a non-profit organization that protects and restores the Morro Bay estuary and its surrounding watershed. They needed illustration and graphic design assistance for a variety of marketing projects.

Morro Bay Estuary Program

BRIEF

The three projects above are ones I worked on for the Morro Bay Estuary Program (MBEP). The Potential Nitrate Sources project and the Land Management project required a series of technical illustrations, layout designs, and a templated MS Word doc. These materials were used for educational purposes.

The Beats for the Bay project was a fundraiser for MBEP. The music event included a live-stream concert by the ska band Upside Ska and a screening of a documentary about the bay. The challenge for me was to create a design that unified the bay and the band. To do this, I used branded colors and combined imagery of the bay and the band. I drew inspiration from vintage ska posters. To add some whimsy, I turned a photo of the band into a ska-style silhouette, and perched an illustrated sandpiper (native to the California bay) on the shoulder of one of the musicians. The final product was a poster, an Instagram post, and a Facebook event banner.
